Historic Preservation Advisory Commission

The City's historic preservation function is run out of the Historic Preservation Office within PlanningAndCommunityDevelopment, advised by the Historic Preservation Advisory Commission, HPAC.

The office maintains an inventory of National Register-listed districts, sites, buildings and structures within CascadeCounty, and makes it available to the public. It holds the criteria for National Register listing and guidance on preparing nominations, technical rehabilitation and restoration advice for owners of historic properties, brochures on preservation tax incentives, easements and tax abatement, and a list of preservation grants.

It publishes walking tours of the Central Business Historic District, the Historic Lower North Side residential area and the Railroad Historic District, a River's Edge history tour, and material on the Vinegar Jones Cabin. A 2025 historic districts map and the commission's 2020 goals and objectives are posted.
