PoliceCommission

Police Commission

The Police Commission reviews all applicants for police officer positions in the PoliceDepartment and hears disciplinary appeals.

Created by state law rather than by the City: MCA 7-32-4151 requires that in cities operating under the commission-manager plan the manager nominate, and the commission confirm, three residents qualified to hold municipal office, to constitute a board known as the police commission. It applies to every organised police department in the state with three or more full-time officers regardless of the form of government.

Membership — three members appointed by the CityCommission, holding the qualifications required to hold municipal office. The City recommends at least one member be familiar with the judicial system and rules of evidence. Members must reside within the City under MCA 7-32-4151(1). Three-year terms.

Meets on demand.

Staffed by the Police Department's Support Services Bureau.

Appointments were made at CityCommission2025-07-01 and CityCommission2025-11-04, each 5-0, and at CityCommission2026-07-07.
