Police Department

The Great Falls Police Department, GFPD in the agenda packets. Jeff Newton is Chief of Police. Captains named in the minutes include Doug Otto, Doug Mahlum and Brian Black; one of them stands in for the Chief at Commission meetings when he is absent.

Structure

The department is organised in bureaus:

Programmes include animal control, the Citizens Academy, Volunteers in Policing, Crime Stoppers, crime mapping, the GFPD Complaint Review Panel, and the Security Camera Registry and Mapping programme.

In the Commission record

Regular business includes the school resource officer agreement with GfpsBoardOfTrustees, renewed for 2025-2026 and again for 2026-2027; the community based policing agreement with the HousingAuthority, renewed annually; the labor agreement with the Great Falls Police Protective Association; Victims of Crime Act grant awards from the Montana Board of Crime Control; and the evidence building project, which has run through several change orders.

Fingerprint fees were set by Resolution 10613 at CityCommission2026-01-20, having been set for hearing at CityCommission2026-01-06.

The 2026-2027 Victims of Crime Act award from the Montana Board of Crime Control, $219,210.67, was accepted at CityCommission2026-08-18.

The PoliceCommission reviews applicants for officer positions and hears disciplinary appeals; it is a separate body appointed by the CityCommission.
