The City Commission is the legislative and policy-making body of the City of Great Falls. It is composed of a Mayor, elected for a two-year term, and four Commissioners serving overlapping four-year terms. All five are elected at large on a non-partisan basis. Municipal elections are held in odd-numbered years. See CityElections.
The Commission does not run the City day to day. Under the FormOfGovernment established by the 1986 charter, it employs a CityManager to direct operations and carry out its policies.
A regular meeting works through a fixed order: military updates, petitions and communications, neighborhood councils, boards and commissions, city manager, consent agenda, public hearings, old business, new business, and finally commission reports and initiatives. Motions are made and seconded by name and the vote is recorded in the minutes as carried or failed with the count and any dissent.
